Bumble Bees in Bowness

For our last YYC's Young Citizen Scientists program of the year, we returned to Belvedere Parkway School to look for bumble bees. It was a bee-yutiful day to be in the park!

Bird's Nest

Wild Rose

When the bumble bees were quiet, we kept our nature eyes open for other signs of life. Birds were singing, flowers were in bloom, and we even spotted a bird's nest! Most students scored at least 5-in-a-row on their Biodiversity Bingo page.

We caught this Hunt's Bumble Bee (Bombus huntii) snoozing this morning. She was beginning to wiggle her abdomen as she warmed up, but was cold enough to stay still for some good photos.

We continued along, spotting many smaller solitary bees, and honey bees along the way.

Learning From Jenn, our Pollinator Biologist

We were very fortunate to be led on our walk by Jenn Retzlaff, a Bumble Bee expert. She helped us know where to look to find bees. She also taught us all about pollination, the length of a bee's tongue, and bee behaviour. Thanks so much for leading us today!

After our walk we returned to the school to learn how to use Bumble Bee Watch. We entered our photos onto the website and are now officially Citizen Scientists!

The "I Wonder" Display in the School Hallway

This wraps up another great year of YYC's Young Citizen Scientists. A big thank you to our funders: RBC Foundation and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. Thanks to your support each of our students will be taking home a native seedling to support pollinators in their own yards and communities.
