January Challenge: New Year Nature Goals!

Happy New Year, fellow Citizen Scientists!

We hope you had an amazing 2020 and are looking forward to spending time with you in 2021!

To kickstart the YYC Young Citizen Scientist program for 2021, we wanted to introduce you to a very special organization, the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC). AIWC is non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wildlife but also educates the public on various issues impacting our local wildlife.

In this video, AIWC touches on the problems facing our urban wildlife on a daily basis!

As you can see from this video, and our YYC Young Citizen Scientists Urban Wildlife Program, our local urban wildlife can suffer from our actions. Luckily, there are ways that we can help out, and we want to hear your ideas! Since it is a New Year, we want to hear your New Goals for 2021!

Your challenge for this month (pick one of the following):

1. Tell us how you are going to help our local wildlife this year and your plan of action!

2. Send us a photo of you getting started on your New Year Goals!

3. Send us a photo of some winter wildlife you come across in January, we will upload it to iNaturalist on your behalf (make sure you tell us your name so we can give you credit)!

*Hint: watch the video again for some ideas!*

Once you’ve decided how you’ll help, send your paragraph or photo(s) to education@greencalgary.org and you’ll be entered into the contest to win the BIG nature prize pack! Winners will be announced in March.

Alternatively, you can submit your challenge on our social media platforms:
