November Challenge: Don't Let it Loose!

For the month of November, we have a special guest video from Alberta Environment and Parks! They are sharing information about how invasive species can influencing our environment. Invasive species are animals, plants, fish, bugs (and beyond) that enter a new environment that it is not from and cause harm.

Harm can be through different ways:

  • Disturb the environment, making it hard for others to live in
  • Can be VERY good at eating…increasing competition for food for the other animals, fish, insects or plants

Watch Janine explain our problems with Goldfish in our local ponds, lakes and rivers.

As Janine said, observing and reporting is a part of keeping our water bodies safe in AlbertaOne way we can do this is through Citizen Science, knowing where and how many invasive species we have will help us maintain Alberta’s biodiversity!

With that in mind, here is our monthly challenge (pick one):

  1. Draw a picture of an invasive species here in Alberta and send us a photo at education@greencalgary.org
  2. Take a photo of an area where you think invasive species visit often (or call home)! Send the photo to education@greencalgary.org.
  3. Find an invasive species in your community, take a photo and send to education@greencalgary.org. We will submit to iNaturalist on your behalf (make sure you send your name, so we can give you credit)!
Alternatively, you can submit your challenge on our social media platforms:
Facebook: Green Calgary
Twitter: @greencalgary
Instagram: @greencalgary

Remember: by participating in this challenge and submitting your photos to us, you will be entered into a contest to win a big nature prize pack!

Tune in next month for the next challenge!
