April Challenge: City Nature Challenge 2021

 HAPPY GLOBAL CITIZEN SCIENCE MONTH!

This month is all about Citizen Science: making observations and identifying animals and plants around us! To celebrate Citizen Science and getting out into nature, Calgary is participating in the City Nature Challenge. The City Nature Challenge is a competition between large cities across the globe to see who can get the highest amount of observations over 4 days. This year, there are over 325 cities competing to get the highest numbers!

Calgary's City Nature Challenge will take place from April 30th to May 3rd. 

How do you participate? Easy! Follow these steps:

1. Creating your own iNaturalist account (if you do not already have one) - you can do this on your phone or laptop

2. Take photos of wildlife within Calgary from April 30th to May 3rd, make sure you note your location!

3. Upload your photos to the Calgary City Nature Challenge Citizen Science Project on iNaturalist before midnight on May 3rd.

Green Calgary is hosting 2 YYC Young Citizen Scientists Programs focusing on Urban Wildlife to help you prepare for the City Nature Challenge, on the following dates:

April 13  from 12:00pm to 1:00pm

April 15 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Here are your challenges for the month of April:

  1. Participate in the YYC City Nature Challenge from April 30th to May 4th! Use the steps above to help you. Then, share your photos with us by email (education@greencalgary.org) or our social media accounts!
  2. Complete the CITY NATURE YYC BINGO CARDS, and send us a photo of your completed card! This is a bioblitz bingo card to fill out as you're outside searching for animals and plants. There are 3 levels: EASY, MEDIUM, AND HARD. Good luck!
  3. Participate in one of our YYC Young Citizen Scientist Programs on April 13th or 15th, see registration details above!
  4. Tell us your answer to the following question: If you were an wild species living in Calgary, where would you choose to call home? Tell us by email or through our social media accounts!

Once you've completed one of the challenges, you’ll be entered into the contest to win the BIG nature prize pack! Winners will be announced in June.
