December is an exciting time of year for many reasons: Christmas, hockey, snow, hot chocolate…but it is also the month that holds the longest-running Citizen Science project, the Annual Christmas Bird Count! This is an event that takes place all over the world, throughout December 14th to January 5th. This year will be the 68th event to take place in Calgary on Sunday, December 20th, 2020.
This is the perfect opportunity to put your Citizen Scientist skills to
the test! If you would like to take part in Calgary Christmas Bird Count,
contact Phil at crampj@telusplanet.net.
For those who would rather stay inside, check out the FeederWatcher portion
of this event! Through this portion, you can stay inside to observe and count
the birds you see in your backyard. Your counts can then be sent to the FeederWatch
Coordinator, which will be added to the overall project. Your observations must
be recorded on Sunday, December 20th, 2020. Send your observations
to Bob at wbird7@gmail.com.
I’ll give you a hint…start with body shape! Pay attention to:
1) the shape of their wings
2) the shape of their head - what does the beak or bill look like?
3) the shape of their tail - is it short or long?
Using this and all of your Citizen Scientist skills…here are your next challenges to choose from:
1) Participate in the Christmas Bird Count (either by going out with the group or through the FeederWatch portion)! Send your photos to education@greencalgary.org or to our social media accounts (see below)!
2) Tell us about your last bird sighting! What colour was it? Do you know what type it was? Where did you find it? Contact us by email or through social media (see below)!
3) Tell us about your favourite bird species in Calgary and why! Contact us by email or through social media (see below)!
Alternatively, you can submit your challenge on our social media platforms:
