Unscrambling The Mystery Egg (Guest Post!)

Congratulations to the Grade 3 class at St Rita School for winning our blog contest. Here's their post!

The Life Guardians at St. Rita School were gifted an unidentified egg a couple of weeks ago, found by a colleague in her backyard, in Cochrane Alberta. Immediately students were itching to find out what type of egg it was and how it came to be in one of our teacher’s backyards. Naturally students started to ask questions which led us to investigate where, what, when, why and how this egg came to be in our hands.

Students used resources like ebird.org and allaboutbirds.org to try to make an identification. Within 24 hours they had sent out emails and tweets connecting with experts. Experts ornithologists, authors and conservation advisors communicated with the students and helped to unscramble the mystery of the speckled egg.

Once students had enough information to confidently identify the egg they didn’t want to stop there! Students decided that they would write stories about the journey of the egg and sketched masterpieces of the identifying bird. Once they were satisfied with their work one student suggested we return the egg to its cached spot in case the predator comes looking for its snack one day!

The learning didn’t stop there. This inquiry-based project led us into soil and worms, and we are now on a learning journey through sound. Using sound maps students will identify different bird sounds in their school backyard and hopefully spot some Canada Geese in the area!
