First Day of Spring Brings Surprises

Watching a Black-capped Chickadee Flit from Branch to Branch

The first day of spring brought summer-like temperatures and we headed out for our walk in the school community to find birds. We saw Common Ravens soaring overhead as well as an American Crow land on a nearby roof. This gave us a great opportunity to note the differences between these two species.

The male House Sparrows were singing their hearts out in an attempt to win a mate. Black-capped Chickadees foraged in the Aspens for their mid-day meal. Black-billed Magpies carried nesting materials preparing for new life.

A Female House Sparrow emerged from the school roof. We spotted her nest in there!

Suddenly we heard a birdsong that was new to me. Could this be a spring migrant I hadn't seen yet this year? I shock of bright green feathers on this bird's belly betrayed the fact that this was not a native species, but an escaped pet! We didn't get a picture but this photo is similar to the bird we saw.

Parakeet Species?

The students were intrigued to see this exotic bird in their neighbourhood. I assured them this was an unusual sighting! Their concern for this lost pet led to one of the school families returning and capturing the bird to house and feed until its owners could be found.

Our newest batch of Young Citizen Scientists are on their way toward a season of new discoveries! May the natural world continue to offer delightful surprises.
