A Glorious Day for Citizen Science!

The bumble bees were out in full force today for our young citizen scientists.

Before we headed out into the field to take photos we learned more about Species at Risk from Chelsey at CPAWS. Protected habitat is so important to protect Alberta's Biodiversity. Right now about 12% of Alberta's lands are protected. To keep our wild species healthy and vibrant we need closer to 50%!

We then played a game that helped us understand how we're all interconnected as species. We all need each other for survival!

And then, off to the highlight of our week together. Off into the surrounding neighbourhood to find and photograph the bumble bees.

(Can you spot the beautiful bee above??)

Some might call these weeds, but now we know these wildflowers are a perfect food source for bumble bees. Keep the mowers away!

Then it was back to the club to upload and submit our pictures to www.bumblebeewatch.org. And some time to draw and do some fun bumble bee activities.

Hard to believe we have only one day left with this fantastic crew. They have become fine young citizen scientists indeed.
